SUDS play an important role in sustainable development. It is important that maintenance schedules are clearly understood and implemented effectively.

In August this year the Government issued a report on the use of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for new developments.

The message in the report is that SuDS should be prioritised for all developments, unless there are clear reasons not to do so.

There is a growing acceptance that a more sustainable approach to managing surface water is needed, and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) mimic natural drainage processes to reduce the effect on the quality and quantity of runoff from developments.

The main recommendations from the SuDS Review were:

  • There must be an understanding that SuDS are an essential consideration for all developments, particularly among small locally-based developers.
  • More certainty is needed for adoption of SuDS maintenance measures making responsible parties accountable for following maintenance schedules.
  • SuDS should be prioritised for all developments, unless there are clear reasons not to do so.

4th Corner currently maintain SuDS for local and regional Clients, and we have experienced Grounds Maintenance teams who understand the key elements of SuDS maintenance and monitoring.
